Pilot Grant to Promote Research Commercialization

A major initiative undertaken by the Center has been the development and support of competitive pilot grant funds to accelerate the local research in infectious diseases, vaccine development, and related technologies that have potential for commercial development, entitled: Pilot Grant Program to Promote Research Commercialization.

This initiative addresses goals of the LVC that include the generation of new extramural project and program funding in vaccine-related research, including SBIR/STTR awards, and the development of local biotechnology in this area. The Center has awarded 5 pilot projects of one year duration totaling over $300,000.

To date, these pilot projects have led directly to the submission of 2 new grant applications, including a Federal R21, with plans for three additional grant submissions in development. Pilot grantees have also submitted two IP disclosures to university technology transfer and published 1 new paper arising from funded research.
